Padres, Rockies to get wild at Coors

Baseball Betting Lines

09/07/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Colorado Rockies will try to make up ground in the wild card race this evening when they play the first of three straight games versus the San Diego Padres at Coors Field.

The Rockies had a three-game winning streak halted on Wednesday and are currently four games back of the wild card-leading Padres. Colorado is also five games behind Arizona for first place in the National League West.

Troy Tulowitzki had two hits and two runs batted in, while Matt Holliday also knocked in a run in Colorado's 5-3 setback to the Giants on Wednesday. Ubaldo Jimenez (3-3) took the loss, yielding three runs and seven hits in five innings.

Right-hander Elmer Dessens will toe the rubber for the Rockies tonight. Dessens is coming off the shortest start of his career, as he lasted just 1 1/3 innings versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday after giving up seven runs on six hits and two walks.

Dessens, who also spent time with Milwaukee this season, fell to 1-1 with an 8.10 earned run average in four starts with the Rockies and 2-2 with a 7.39 ERA in 16 games (four starts) this year.

The righty got a no-decision versus the Padres on August 16 despite allowing five runs over 4 2/3 innings, and is 2-6 with a save in 27 career games (10 starts) against them with a 5.90 ERA.

Justin Germano will attempt to shake off a tough-luck loss when he starts for the Padres tonight. Germano allowed just one run on eight hits in six innings of work on Sunday against the Dodgers, but got no support in a 5-0 setback. The loss dropped his season record to 7-8 with a 4.11 ERA.

The right-hander was hammered for six runs in five innings when he faced Colorado on July 25, and is 0-2 with an 8.15 ERA in four career starts against them.

The Padres lost two of three in their big series with Arizona earlier in the week, including 9-6 on Wednesday at Chase Field. San Diego took a gamble by starting ace Jake Peavy on three days rest, but it didn't pay off as he was rocked for eight runs over four-plus innings.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in a defeat that dropped the club a game behind the Diamondbacks in the standings.

The Padres are 7-5 versus the Rockies this season, with the club splitting six games in Colorado.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
